Can remote compiler work over a slow internet connection?

I have developed a Qt mobile application in Windows but, after a long break, I still consider myself new. I recently installed Qt on Ubuntu Linux and intend to develop an application for the Symbian target. I notice from the documentation that I need to use the remote compiler to generate the installation files. I am in an environment where Internet speeds rarely reach 20 KB/s and can be as low as 1 KB/s. Browsing is alright but downloading large files is usually a problem. How capacity-hungry is the remote compiler? Can it work reasonably with such slow Internet speeds. I prefer to work in the Linux environment, which has so far been problem-free. Specifically, my debugger worked first-time unlike in Windows where I could not get it to work.
