Everyone has its own habitudes while programming, even for hobby as well as for work.
I would like to ask you: do you listen music while programming?
I personally don't, but what do you think about this?
Loud and shout
Some good music/radio at medium level
Light background
Silence: as deep as possible

I listen to music while programming, because silence is boring;-)
But the music is only low in the background. Normally I listen to classics, but if I am in a bad mood and I do some basic programming stuff I listen Klezmer music.
sure why not ? I sometimes listen to radio low in the background, and sometimes, in the dead of the night, when all in the house are asleep I just ear the deep silience while programming.

Like my projects ? Buy me a kofi
Usually Eric Clapton or other Blues/R&B in background. Classics is also a favorite choice (Bah, Tchaikovsky, Shubert and Shostakovitch for hardcore system things )
Yeah, I always have the radio playing. Usually it's rock, techno and electronica
Always. It helps me keep my concentration up and also has a beneficial influence on my mood. [Loud and shout]
Me, Grimlock, not "nice dino". ME BASH BRAINS!
Usually when I design something, lately mostly software but I do hardware sometimes, I like music in the background. Nowadays I work on my laptop 95% of the time and speakers on it are lousy so I either plug in some headphones or I do my work in silence.
Yes, but music with singing is too distracting for me, so it has to be instrumental, electronica, or just ambience. I don't do much "big name" stuff, but more like Xerxes and Romeo Knight.
I used to have music while programming. It makes me free and relaxed.
I find my productivity goes up a lot when i listen to music, keeps my mind from wondering. Whenever I'm getting nothing done I stick some loud music in my headphones take my shoes off and i always manage to get focused.
It really depends on my mood. Sometimes music gives me a good boost and keeps me focused, other times the music is just way to distracting and I work in silence...
Yeah, and unless its late at night or my brother's asleep I keep it up pretty high. Mostly stuff like Nevermore, DevilDriver, or Fear Factory.
We do what we must. Because we can.
Nice poll ;-)
While programming, I like to listen to hard trance and good old Belgian retro house!
The BPM kinda takes control of my typing rate ;-)
So, loud and shout, as it filters out unwanted background noise. Earphones preferred though, not sure if my colleagues would appreciate that kind of music...
Interesting poll,
I never actually thought about it, but it all depends on the project i guess, I'll listen to music when the project is trivial and something i know i can get done. If the project is more involved and challenging, i need every bit of concentration so its silence then..I have no particular genre, i just put all the music i have on shuffle.
I never listen when coding. It is disturbing me. I guess it is just me but since you asked.
As some poeple said, silence is just too boring. Always have somehting in the background, not too loud though.
gaddlord I'm on your side
And thank you all so far, I'm very glad that you like this poll!
I made it because my boss keep saying me that I am the only one on heart that hate hear every sort of nois or music while programming... actually, given from the results, I am starting to wonder that my boss was right...

When I'm at work, I find no music is best for concentration.
When at home however, I can't stand silence and have to have music.
Maybe the ambience noise at work is enough for me.
I do listen to music when I know what I'm doing, it even gives me new ideas. But I turn it off when I research, because it gets me distracted.
If I have (usual || normal) mood I listen "Some good music/radio at medium level".
If I have (good || greate) || (bad || terrible) mood I listen "Loud and shout ".
