How to playback a IP cam?

Hello, any one knows how to show an IP cam streaming for both Windows and Linux. I try to use Phonon but it gives me an error on Windows. And I try to use libvlc but it doesn't show anything or crash.

What codec do your ip cam use?

MPEG what? MPEG is a group, and at the last count, had about 15 different standards of video compression.
