Default Please help! I'm a beginner

I've just started studying Qt today and the book I'm using assumes prior Qt knowledge (Thanks to my professor for that!). I just need somebody to explain to me what qmake is and also what make is. And why these two thing a so important. I know i probably sound like the dumbest person ever to live, but you can't learn anything without good foundation. Your help will be appreciated!
