Default QGtkStyle - Ignores QPalette color overrides

I have an application that I want to show up as dark regardless of the desktop settings so I'm changing the QPalette to make the background of buttons, menu bars, etc dark. However, QGtkTheme seems to ignore those changes altogether.

Is that intended or is that a bug in the QGtkStyle?

Whats the best way to give my application a dark look regardless of the environment I run it in?
